there emerges a leader who transforms a society whom we should support

In the heart of Kenya's breadbasket lies Trans Nzoia County, a region renowned for its fertile lands and agricultural prowess. At the helm of its leadership is Governor George Natembeya, a man whose unwavering commitment to his constituents has ushered in a new era of development and accountability. Since assuming office, Governor Natembeya has embarked on transformative initiatives, from distributing essential agricultural inputs to championing civic education, all while holding both local and national governments accountable to the people.

A Leader Rooted in Service

Before venturing into politics, George Natembeya built a distinguished career in public administration. His tenure as the Rift Valley Regional Commissioner showcased his dedication to public service and his adeptness at handling complex regional challenges. This rich background laid a solid foundation for his subsequent role as Governor of Trans Nzoia County.

Empowering Farmers Through Timely Support

Agriculture stands as the backbone of Trans Nzoia's economy, with maize being the predominant crop. Understanding the critical role of timely agricultural inputs, Governor Natembeya launched a comprehensive seed distribution program aimed at bolstering food security and enhancing farmers' livelihoods.

In March 2024, the county government initiated a 10-day free seed distribution program, benefiting over 103,000 vulnerable farmers. This Ksh100 million initiative was designed to accelerate food production and ensure that farmers received quality seeds ahead of the planting season. Governor Natembeya emphasized the importance of this program, stating that it marked "a new transformational journey paving a new path towards social-economic advancement."

Building on this momentum, the county government, in collaboration with the national government, distributed free certified maize seeds to small-scale farmers in February 2024. This initiative aimed to increase maize production by 10%, addressing both local consumption needs and commercial demands. Governor Natembeya highlighted the county's potential, noting that while Trans Nzoia produces six million bags of maize annually, there remains room for growth to achieve complete food sufficiency.

Furthering these efforts, in October 2023, the national government, with support from county leadership, launched the distribution of 70,000 metric tonnes of sunflower seedlings to farmers in 24 counties, including Trans Nzoia. This initiative aimed to reduce the nation's reliance on imported edible oils, with Kenya spending up to Sh117 billion annually on such imports. Governor Natembeya urged local farmers to embrace sunflower farming, describing it as a worthy cash crop and encouraging diversification to maximize farm benefits.

Championing Civic Education and Ethical Leadership

Beyond agricultural initiatives, Governor Natembeya has been a stalwart advocate for civic education, emphasizing the role of informed electorates in shaping governance. He has actively engaged residents of Trans Nzoia and the broader Western Kenya region in discussions about the responsibilities of elective leaders and the importance of active citizen participation in democratic processes.

Through workshops, town hall meetings, and community outreach programs, the governor's administration has sought to enlighten citizens on their rights and duties. This empowerment ensures that leaders remain accountable and that development projects align with the genuine needs of the people. Governor Natembeya's firm stance on ethical leadership serves as a model, inspiring both current and aspiring leaders to prioritize integrity and service over personal gain.

Holding the Government Accountable

Governor Natembeya's commitment to his constituents extends to holding both local and national governments accountable. He has been vocal in reminding governmental bodies of their obligations, ensuring that promises translate into tangible actions. This vigilance has fostered a culture of transparency and responsiveness, leading to more effective governance and improved public trust.

A Vision for Sustainable Development

Under Governor Natembeya's leadership, Trans Nzoia County has witnessed a paradigm shift towards sustainable development. By focusing on agriculture, education, infrastructure, and healthcare, his administration aims to elevate the quality of life for all residents. The governor's holistic approach recognizes that true progress stems from addressing multiple facets of society concurrently.

Governor George Natembeya's tenure in Trans Nzoia County exemplifies the profound impact of dedicated and visionary leadership. His initiatives in agriculture have not only boosted food production but have also empowered farmers economically. Through civic education, he has cultivated an informed electorate capable of demanding accountability and fostering democratic values. By steadfastly holding governmental bodies accountable, Governor Natembeya ensures that development remains people-centric and that the aspirations of Trans Nzoia's residents are realized. His leadership serves as a beacon of hope and a blueprint for other regions striving for sustainable and inclusive growth.
